Leatherby’s Family Creamery

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Leatherby’s is a favorite of many Utahans due to its classic flavor combinations, family oriented atmosphere, and delicious American cuisine. Leatherby’s piles on the ice cream and is very generous with toppings; one sundae could feed three people if you eat dinner as well. The ice cream is very creamy and rich. Make sure that you have some time when going to Leatherby’s. Due to its popularity, it is always busy! It is also more of a sit down restaurant, so take your time, eat, and enjoy your company.

A Bit Of History

Leatherby’s originated in Sacramento, California in 1982 and was founded by Sally and Dave Leatherby. The original ice cream shop is still running and there are two other locations in California. There are also three great locations in Utah in Orem, Draper and Taylorsville. The Utah locations are not owned and operated by the Leatherby’s, but are run by other wonderful families and all maintain that homey small-town diner vibe.

What Leatherby’s Offers

You’ll not be disappointed with your options at Leatherby’s. In addition to over 25 different ice cream flavors, Leatherby’s has a raspberry sorbet and two non-fat yogurt choices. Leatherby’s also has several specialties and American ice cream classics including The Banana Split, The Hot Fudge Sundae, and The Strawberry Soda. Leatherby’s also caters and will host birthday parties.

My Experience

I had heard many great things about Leatherby’s before going there. The first time I went, there was a long line but it was entirely worth it. I got a peanut butter chocolate sundae and it was exquisite. It was creamy and there was TONS of chocolate and peanut butter syrup. I made the mistake of getting the sundae to myself. It most certainly could have been shared.

The French fries were absolutely phenomenal as well. The next time I went to Leatherby’s I shared the sundae pictured to the left with some friends, and it was perfect. The toasted almond ice cream is to die for. The specialty ice creams are on the pricy side but when split with someone else and considering the size and quality of the ice cream, it is doable.

I will give Leatherby’s four out of five stars because it has such a cute, fun atmosphere and their ice cream is super tasty. I am giving it one start off of five because it is more expensive than I typically prefer and I have loved other ice cream spots more. Be sure to check out Leatherby’s and let me know what you think!
